Cantera
Cantera - Woven Piece
Aguascalientes, Mexico 2024. “Weaving is always accompanied”
The exploration begins with Guadalupe Romo, a Mexican artisan weaver, by understanding the meaning of the woman weaver, in different places worldwide. The woman is the one who transmits the craft from generation to generation. It represents community and togetherness.
Aguascalientes is a state in central Mexico where the tradition has been preserved. Their most recognized craft is "deshilado", which consists of creating voids in the textile by carefully removing the fibers to create patterns and designs.
In its architecture, the earth tones that the pink quarry gives to the main buildings stand out in many streets and the city center.
Cantera is a woven piece composed of fabrics in different fibers, wool and cotton, which intertwine with each other generating layers and voids. It evokes the "deshilado" technique from the translucent spaces it generates, either with spaces without weave that reveal what is behind, or spaces without fabric in the complete piece.
The fibers have been dyed with walnut leaves, pomegranate,
pericón, turmeric, grana cochineal, cempazuchil, avocado and huisache, which create tones that are related to the pink quarry, typical of the architecture of Aguascalientes.
